The incident has no legal consequences for the official who fired the fatal shots. It is clear to the public prosecutor that the procedure was self-defense. The policeman therefore does not have to answer in court. That reports the “Berner Zeitung”.

Reto V.’s father receives police officers
Reto V. fled a psychiatric clinic on July 17. A search by the police finally ended in the early evening on the Kuhnweg in Bern.
–
Details from the documents on the fatal operation now show how the police fired the shot: On site, the two-man patrol that was then deployed was initially received by Daniel V. *, the father of Reto V. Daniel V. whispers to the police that his son is doing very badly. Then he calls Reto from the top floor of the house down to the entrance.

Army pistol from a drawer
At first it seems that Reto V. can be brought back to psychiatry without any further measures. V. goes back to a room on the upper floor, his father and the emergency services follow him. Then the situation changes suddenly.
–
From the drawer of a chest of drawers, Reto V. suddenly pulls a gun and carries out a loading movement. One of the police officers rushes downstairs and asks for radio reinforcement. Together with the father, the other policeman runs to another room and takes cover.

Father of the killed shows understanding
Reto V. does not respond to repeated requests to drop the weapon. Shortly thereafter one of the policemen pulls the trigger. He shoots a total of four times on V.’s upper body, which immediately collapses.
–
Daniel V also confirms that the operation went like this. When clarifying the incident, the father also stated that he could understand the police officer who had shot his son. He had to act like that.

Police officer receives compensation
The pistol with which Reto V. suddenly threatened the police is the father’s army weapon. Daniel V. told the investigators that he had stored his service weapon in the chest of drawers in order to have it “within reach”. Two cartridges were pointed in the magazine, the pistol was secured, according to V.

Since everyone involved described the situation in the row family house roughly the same, the public prosecutor is now closing the case because of willful killing. The canton of Bern must pay the procedural costs. This also includes an allowance for the accused police officer in the amount of around CHF 7,000. (cat)
