Berlin initiative commemorates the corona dead

BerlinFor the Journalist and author Christian Y. Schmidt the ignorance is a scandal – the ignorance of the 350 corona deaths on average who die lonely in hospitals and do not get a face in the media. They remained a statistic that nobody publicly mourns. That is different in the case of plane crashes, traffic accidents or terrorist attacks – here the public would recognize the people behind the numbers, the author believes. The virus remains abstract as an opponent.

That is why the writer and the artist Veronika Radulovic a memorial initiative founded. On St. Nicholas Day, the corona deaths were commemorated for the first time across Germany, including at the Stierbrunnen on Arnswalder Platz in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, with a spontaneous campaign. The invitation said: “For weeks hundreds of people have been dying of Covid-19 every day in Germany. (…) The German population seems strangely unaffected compared to the reaction when similar figures were reported from Italy, Spain or the United Kingdom in the spring. Since we have also died of Covid-19 on this scale, the German media are content with a short sentence when they report the number of deaths at all. “

Around twenty people took part in the silent commemoration of the Covid-19 dead on Arnswalder Platz in Berlin on December 6, 2020 until 6 p.m. The prayer was organized by the writer Christian Y. Schmidt.

In order to counteract forgetting and to remind of the urgency of the corona protective measures, the initiators have invited to set up grave candles for the dead – in compliance with all prohibitions. The campaign also took place in Frankfurt am Main and other cities and is to be repeated regularly (next time next Sunday). The initiators point out that the corona deniers have a strong media presence in Germany. The victims and supporters of tougher protective measures, however, receive little attention.
