Benoît Cosnefroy stews Belgian favorites with a pear in Brabantse Pijl

Benoît Cosnefroy has won the Brabantse Pijl. The 28-year-old Frenchman from Decathlon-AG2R made it after a thrilling final in a sprint with an elite group ahead of our compatriots Dylan Teuns and Tim Wellens.

The Brabantse Pijl, that is two hundred kilometers of twisting and turning in the region around Overijse. The succession of slopes made it another tough race. The passages over the steep Moskesstraat, known from the 2021 World Cup, and the Holstheide in particular caused damage.

It was on Moskesstraat that a strong trio broke away about 30 kilometers from the finish: Tim Wellens, Dylan Teuns and Marijn van den Berg. They quickly created a lead of twenty seconds.

Behind that trio there was a rapid attack, but due to the poor organization in the peloton the gap was never completely closed. On the last passage of the Moskesstraat, Quinten Hermans was able to make the jump to the front, and a few more riders were able to join later on the Holstheide, including the French springer Benoît Cosnefroy.

An elite group of seven riders entered the final kilometers, but Van den Berg did not wait for a sprint. The young Dutchman played knight or mass, but fell silent and was caught in the last hectometers. In the sprint there was ultimately no match for Cosnefroy, who trumped Teuns and Wellens. Hermans finished sixth.

For the 28-year-old Cosnefroy, it is finally a prize in his fifth participation in the Brabantse Pijl. He previously finished second and third twice in Overijse. It is his fourth victory of the season, at the end of March he was also the best in the French semi-classic Paris-Camembert.
