Belgium Increases Contribution to Green Climate Fund in Paris Agreement

Brussels, 6 October / WAM / Belgium has pledged to raise its contribution to the Green Climate Fund resulting from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 by 50% from the current 100 million euros to 150 million euros for the period from 2024 to 2027.

This was announced by Caroline Jenes, Minister of Development Cooperation of Belgium, during the “High-Level Pledging Conference of the Green Climate Fund” hosted by Bonn.

In total, 25 countries pledged during the conference to provide $9.3 billion (about 8.8 billion euros) for the same period to the Fund, within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to finance climate-related projects in developing countries.

The fund’s financing of $17 billion (about 16 billion euros) is targeted to be increased to $50 billion (about 47.4 billion euros) by 2030.

So far, 129 countries have benefited from Green Climate Fund investments through projects that provide green energy to low-income people, enhance the climate resilience of indigenous peoples, and ensure food and water security, among other things.
