Belgium subscribes to the purchase of the vaccine Curevac, once it has obtained a marketing authorization. Our country wants to order 2.9 million doses, the Interministerial Conference on Public Health decided on Tuesday.

The European Commission is negotiating on behalf of the Member States for the procurement procedures of vaccines against Covid-19 and submits contracts to the Member States. They then individually decide whether they are interested. In Belgium, this is done by the Interministerial Conference on Public Health, following an opinion from the advisory committee that is responsible for the analysis of purchase files.

In mid-August 2020, the advisory committee already gave a positive opinion for the contract for the vaccine candidate from AstraZeneca and Oxford University. In November, a positive recommendation was issued for the vaccine candidate from Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) and that of Pfizer and BioNTech. So now there is also an advice for the candidate vaccine from the German developer Curevac, on which the health ministers have decided to subscribe to the purchase.

The European contract concerns the purchase of 225 million doses. Belgium would purchase 2.9 million doses of this. Clinical trials with the Curevac vaccine candidate are underway in Europe, including our country.

But first, the vaccines must be licensed to enter the market; so far this has not yet been done for any vaccine against covid-19. This remains a competence of the EMA in cooperation with the competent national authorities. If no marketing authorization is granted by the EMA for the vaccine in question, the contract will be dissolved, ‘he said.
