Belgians have to pay 56,000 euros in Spain for graffiti on trains | News

Look before you leap. This is the message given by a Spanish judge to those who like to add color to commuters’ lives by painting trains. He sentenced a graffiti painter (28) with Belgian nationality to pay no less than 56,000 euros.

The self-proclaimed artist, born in Belgium but living in Spain, could be linked by the police to at least 14 ‘works of art’ that were placed on trains in different Spanish cities. He enjoyed himself on locomotives and wagons in Malaga, but also in the provinces of Almeria, Murcia and Valencia.

Apparently the Belgian had made it his hobby, because he had been working on it since 2015. He now has to pay 56,000 euros in compensation for the cleaning and repair costs.

4 million euros

In our country, too, there are severe penalties for the daubing of trains. Anyone caught will pay for the costs. Anyone who persists in such vandalism can even end up in jail for up to 5 years. According to a spokesman, the NMBS spends more than 4 million euros on the repairs every year.

On the other hand, many commuters can appreciate graffiti on trains. This is how the Facebook group counts’Painted Trains‘in which photos of painted trains in Belgium often turn up 85,000 members.
