Government Belarus said it was forced to host tactical nuclear weapons Russia due to “unprecedented” Western pressure. Belarus insists it does not violate any international agreements.
Earlier last weekend, President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced plans to put nuclear weapons tactics in the Moscow-allied country. Suddenly it drew criticism from Western countries.
“Belarus was forced to respond in order to strengthen its own security and defense capabilities,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said, as reported by news agencies AFPTuesday (28/3/2023).
It said the country had experienced “unprecedented” political and economic pressure from the United States and its allies.
Belarus said it would have no control over the weapons and their deployment was “in no way contrary” to the Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Belarus had allowed Russia to use its territory as a launching pad for Moscow’s attack on Ukraine last year.
The two countries have since held joint military exercises on Belarusian territory and increased cooperation between their militaries.
“Military cooperation between Belarus and Russia carried out in accordance with international law,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said.
