BBC: Ministers will ask Johnson to leave

Several sitting ministers in the British government will on Wednesday night ask Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign, according to the BBC and Sky News.

Among those who will reportedly line up in the prime minister’s residence to ask Johnson to resign is newly appointed finance minister Nadhim Zahawi, according to the BBC.

On Tuesday, Zahawi took over the post from Rishi Sunak, who resigned, citing that he no longer had confidence in Johnson.

Minister of Transport Grant Shapps was also observed just before 6.30 pm when he entered the Prime Minister’s residence in Downing Street, according to the BBC.

Minister of Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Minister of Culture Nadine Dorries are also in the Prime Minister’s residence.

Minister of Trade and Industry Kwasi Kwarteng is also among the ministers who will ask Boris Johnson to resign as prime minister, according to the BBC.

Police Minister Kit Malthouse says it has been “a terribly difficult day”. He did not want to answer questions from journalists about “is all over”.

According to Sky News, Malthous is part of the delegation that will ask Johnson to leave.

Earlier Wednesday night, the 1922 committee is said to have discussed a rule change that would make it possible to make a motion of no confidence against Johnson. According to Reuters, the meeting has been postponed until July 11.

According to Sky News, the chairman of the committee, Graham Brady, is in place in Downing Street on Wednesday night.

Johnson survived a no-confidence motion in early June this year. A possible rule change from the committee will be able to remove Johnson’s immunity now, and make it possible to make no confidence in him again.
