Barty overwhelms Teichmann in Cincinnati final

Top seeded Ash Barty won her fifth title of the season by winning eight of the last nine games over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann to win 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday.

Barty, who won her first championship at Wimbledon in July before being upset in the third round of the Tokyo Olympics tennis tournament, will arrive well toned at the US Open, which kicks off August 30 in New York.

Teichmann stunned to reach the final, leaving second-best seeded Naomi Osaka, Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and fourth-seeded Karolina Pliskova on her way.

“This is where you belong,” Barty told Teichmann during the post-game ceremony. “You played exceptionally this week.”

Australia’s Barty broke Teichmann to take a 5-3 lead in the first set, then won the next six games.

In the second heat, Teichmann received medical attention on his right foot, which was heavily bandaged.

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev faced Andrey Rublev in the men’s final later on Sunday.
