Barometer of favorite comedians in Quebec history

Every week, The newspaper, in collaboration with the firm Léger, unveils a probe on a variety of subjects that affect you from near or far. Our Barometer thus measures what makes you vibrate or frown as a Quebecker, young and old, francophone, anglophone or allophone, in Montreal or in the region.

► Methodology

The survey was carried out in two stages. An open question was asked to the LEO (Leger Opinion) panelists to submit their favorite comedians. Then, a scientific survey was carried out among a thousand representative Quebecers from January 2 to 4, 2021 on the basis of the most mentioned comedians. Each respondent could choose up to three comedians. The 25 most popular comedians are featured in this barometer.

The finding

This barometer on the favorite comedians in Quebec history mixes the legends of the past as much as the flavors of the moment. The presence at the top of Yvon Deschamps is hardly surprising for the inventor of the stand-up in Quebec. But let us also note the presence of the “old” Jean-Marc Parent, RBO, Dominique Michel, Ding and Dong and Sol who have all marked us, and the “new” Simon Leblanc, Jay Du Temple, Sam Breton who are emerging.

The surprise

If Rachid Badouri is 1st among 18-24 year olds and Mike Ward is 2nd among 25-34 year olds, the latter are less than 2% among older people. Lise Dion for her part is 2nd for women and only 6th choice for men. Sugar Sammy is 1st among Anglophones … but 32nd among Francophones. Not easy to please everyone.

Disappointment

Only three women, Lise Dion (3rd), Dominique Michel (12th) and Marianna Mazza (18th) are among the 25 favorite comedians of Quebecers. Nevertheless, a female succession is coming with Katherine Levac, Rosalie Vaillancourt and Virginie Fortin, who are all in the next group.

When I saw the results of our barometer on the favorite humorists in Quebec history, I laughed!

You will tell me that when we talk about humor, the least thing is to have a good laugh. But what made me laugh was the irony of the situation: while we are swimming in political correctness, Quebecers say loud and clear that their favorite comedian (and by far) is Yvon Deschamps, the one who is the least politically correct!

It seems to me that there is a fairly clear message for all the reluctant broadcasters and companies who kneel in front of the smallest lobby, who crash in front of the first militant come, who abdicate in front of the first offended horsehair.

Only a few weeks ago, Radio-Canada withdrew an episode of La petite vie because of a complaint, then re-aired it with this warning:

“This program is offered as it was originally created and may contain different social and cultural representations of today. ”

Hey lala, it’s all of Yvon Deschamps’ work that should be accompanied by this warning!

And when I see that Martin Matte is the second favorite of Quebecers, I can not help laughing thinking of the advertisement for Maxi where Matte had gained weight during confinement.

The majority of Quebecers understood that the joke was not grossophobic at all, but a few activists were enough for the grocer to withdraw his ad.

When I see that Mike Ward (with silly and nasty humor) and RBO (the group that made the scathing jokes) are in the top 10 favorites, I tell myself that in Quebec, the silent majority have a better sense of humor than the rowdy minority who are constantly offended.

In fact, we have such a good sense of humor in Quebec that our 5th favorite comedian is Sugar Sammy … who keeps laughing at Quebeckers! This one is really good!
