Sarah Onyango Obama was born in Kenya in 1922, and worked as a teacher and philanthropist. She was the third wife of Barack Obama’s paternal grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama. He passed away in 1979.

According to Sarah Onyango Obama’s daughter Marsat Onyango, the mother passed away on Monday, at a hospital in the town of Kisumu in western Kenya. She tells the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation that the mother was admitted to hospital on Sunday.
