Back to school in September 2020. Will masks be obligatory? Dariusz Piontkowski presented the guidelines

On Tuesday, the Minister of National Education, Dariusz Piontkowski, explained to MPs how the ministry was preparing to open schools on September 1. – We predict that the overwhelming majority of schools will operate normally – he argued. Opposition deputies were not persuaded, however, and criticized the minister for, in their opinion, insufficient actions before the resumption of educational institutions.

– We do not want schools to become places of contagion, but to be places of education – said Krystyna Szumilas from the PO just after the start of the session of the parliamentary education committee. Its meeting was convened at the request of opposition MPs who wanted to find out how the education ministry is preparing until September 1.

The minister of education, Dariusz Piontkowski, repeated almost the same things he told journalists at last week’s conference. – We anticipate that the overwhelming majority of schools will operate normally – said Piontkowski. And he reminded that it is the directors – after consulting the sanitary station and the governing body (commune or poviat – editor) who will decide on possible transition to partial or full distance learning.

The Ministry has prepared guides

– We have prepared guides and guides on how to conduct this education in an effective and safe manner – said the minister. He boasted about the epodreczniki.pl portal, which many schools used in spring during distance learning. – It is an integrated educational platform, the tools of which made it possible to conduct classes. It enjoyed great popularity, there are millions of accounts on it, we recorded hundreds of millions of hits and about a million users every day – he said. However, he did not mention that despite earlier announcements, this platform will not be supplemented in the near future with a chat for videoconferencing, the lack of which many teachers complained about.

Criticized by some MPs for the fact that the regulations governing work in the pandemic are not detailed enough, Piontkowski replied: – Life will always be richer than the thickest and most accurate legal provisions.

Walls don’t infect, people can

According to the education minister, “most questions arise from the fact that someone has not read the guidelines or read them with a lack of understanding.” – Some questions were asked only to wreak havoc, such as how many masks the ministry bought. Although we have said many times that we do not assume the obligation to cover the nose and mouth, the minister reminded. And he added: – School is not a place where everyone gets infected immediately, as soon as they come.

These words were later referred to by, among others, Szumilas: – It is true, walls do not infect, but those who work or study in schools can infect – she commented. – I am terrified – emphasized the former minister of education several times.

Katarzyna Lubnauer from the Civic Coalition was surprised by the ministry that it had not developed solutions for teachers over 60, i.e. at risk. And she criticized the earlier statements of Deputy Minister Marzena Machałek, who said on TVN24 that these teachers have a choice and can retire. – Knowing how many teachers are missing, I would not even risk suggesting that these oldest teachers retire – she said. And she reminded that many schools are overcrowded – especially high schools and technical schools in large cities, which are bursting due to the so-called accumulation of years, which took place a year ago as a result of the liquidation of junior high schools.

What about equal opportunities?

Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk, MP from the Left, pointed out that although the authorities of the Ministry of National Education say that they are looking at other European solutions, they are not using the best. Among other things, she talked about Italy, where millions of individual desks were purchased, several million masks and money was prepared to hire additional teachers to help students keep their distance.

Dziemianowicz-Bąk also emphasized that the Ministry of National Education does not deal with children who dropped out of the system in spring (it concerns students with whom teachers could not contact during distance learning) and it is not known what is happening to them. There is also no question of equalizing the opportunities and gaps resulting from distance learning. “Nobody’s even monitoring it,” she criticized.

Barbara Nowacka from KO spoke in a similar vein. – Many children were exposed to stress and left in an oppressive environment. What to do so that these children could efficiently return to the learning system and stop being afraid? It is not only about equalizing opportunities, but also psychological help – she noted.

Successive MPs also appealed to the Ministry of National Education to loosen the core curriculum.

Parents are also responsible

The minister of education was defended by Kazimierz Moskal from Law and Justice, who said, among other things, that parents are also responsible for children’s health. – After all, parents will not let sick children go to school – he commented.

– Only negative comments, everything is wrong – commented the chairman of the committee Mirosław Stachowiak-Różecka (PiS). And she was ironic that opposition MPs would react in the same way if the minister proposed “10 times more schools, separated by forest, separate rooms for all classes, 200 percent more teachers and total flexibility of parents at work.” At the same time, she thanked Members for the discussion on remote education.

Katarzyna Lubnauer asked the chairwoman of the committee if she had ever tried to reach the sanitary department.

– In the case of beaches, you see no problem, otherwise in the case of schools – commented Minister Piontkowski. And it resembled an Internet image of a crowded beach and a dialogue written to it, in which the child asks if he will go to school in September, and his mother tells him that it is not known if it will be safe enough.
