Back to school – Diario La Prensa

The new school year in Honduras is about to start in February, which will continue – for now – in virtual mode despite the difficulties that have been evident since schools and colleges closed last year, in response to the health emergency of covid-19.

Education, like most areas of daily life, has undergone a drastic change as a result of the pandemic. Children and adolescents were forced to move their classes to the virtual world, dragging their parents who have also had to adapt to these new dynamics at home.

This new scenario of the school suddenly transferred to the digital environment has not been easy, especially when it is loaded with a technological delay and because the change was drastic. We were all taken by surprise.

In this scenario, going back to class can be overwhelming if we haven’t learned from last year’s lessons; If there was no concern in understanding how to help our children face this challenge of online learning, or if we are convinced that it is a responsibility of the teacher and we are not aware that the role of guardian of parents is now more important for education in House.

For example, parents are advised to talk with their children about these changes, about how they feel about going back to school online, both in the positive and negative aspects. They miss the classroom, their school and their peers because in cyberspace you cannot develop many daily activities.

On the positive side, we must recall that the change in the system has brought mothers and fathers closer to the teachers, who have committed — even more — to their children’s learning, actively participate in some tasks, are more aware of the program and the schedule. They stay more informed. The negative continues to be the weaknesses of the system and the technological barriers for the less favored population.

Complying with classes and tasks in virtuality has implied greater stress, overwhelm and fatigue for the student who feels the burden heaviest, while teachers battle due to the lack of technological tools, the absence of internet in large areas or even the lack of devices to receive classes.

It is up to parents to assume this challenge of distance education, support ourselves in its advantages, improve and strive to learn about the use of technology, equip them with what is necessary and be there to fulfill the responsibilities as guardians of our children. That is an inescapable commitment.
