A baby was recently born in Singapore with antibodies to Covid-19. The mother became infected with the virus in March when she was pregnant. The birth gives researchers more insight into the possible transmission of the virus from mother to child.

The baby was born in November and was not infected with the virus, but it did have antibodies to Covid-19 in the body. The Straits Times write that. “My doctor suspects that I passed on my Covid-19 antibodies during my pregnancy,” Mom Celine Ng-Chan told the newspaper. The woman became infected with the virus in March, when she was pregnant. She had mild complaints, but remained in the hospital for two and a half weeks. In the meantime she is healed.
According to the World Health Organization, it is not yet clear whether infected pregnant women can pass the virus to their unborn child during pregnancy. Or maybe even during labor.

Currently, the virus has not yet been found in samples of the fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb. No traces of the virus have yet been found in breast milk. Chinese doctors also reported in October that babies are born with antibodies, but these are expected to decline over time.
New York doctors recently reported in a study that transmission of the virus from mothers to newborn babies is rare.
