Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – The Austrian media artist Valie Export received the Max Beckmann Prize from the city of Frankfurt on Sunday. Ina Hartwig (SPD), head of the cultural department, praised the prizewinner in the Paulskirche as a pioneer of “an artistic feminism” that radically overturned the prevailing perception of the female body in a patriarchal society. The prize has been awarded every three years since 1978 and is endowed with 50,000 euros.

Valie Export was born in Linz in 1940 with the name Waltraud Lehner. Her photographs, sculptures, videos and installations can be found in museums such as the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Tate Modern in London. Hartwig, head of the cultural department, explained that the artist used avant-garde means to deal with gender roles, attributions of identity and liberation from conventions early on. She paved the way for numerous female artists who take “a decidedly female perspective”.
