For four days, the testers strolled through the world of craft beer to find the best beers of the year. 222 beer specialties from breweries worldwide were awarded a medal at the “7th Meininger’s International Craft Beer Award 2020”. The craft brewers from Germany received a total of 134 medals, but prizes were also awarded to breweries from Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Taiwan, Singapore and the USA.
“And this across categories, so that this year, in addition to well-known international styles such as IPA or Porter and Stout, classic German and lighter beer styles such as Pils, Helles or Export were also awarded,” said tasting manager Christian Wolf. The beers of the Kundmüller brewery inn in Franconia won ten medals. The jury awarded another award to the Swiss Schützengarten brewery. It was awarded the titles for the best international craft beer and the best non-fermented beer. The bottom line was that they completely convinced the testers and were awarded the title of “Best international craft brewers”.
Germany’s best craft beer comes from Hamburg
The best craft beer in Germany is brewed in Hamburg. The Altonaer Landgang brewery was raised to the national top. The winning beer is called the Senatsbock and is produced in the Hamburg tradition. Even the best non-alcoholic beer of the year in the “top fermentation” category comes from the Hanseatic city: the Road Runner Coffee Stout from the Kehrwieder creative brewery. It is made from coffee that is roasted regionally.
The 45 testers were particularly impressed by this year’s IPA. The India Pale Ale is one of the most popular craft beer varieties in the world and the jury was also impressed. No variety received more awards, 24 beers in this category were awarded.
