Garmin by the wall. Either they pay millions or the users continue to have problems

About the author

The dilemma returns – should terrorists be negotiated? It’s a matter of which it concerns not only politics.

Garmin’s problems have been going on since Thursday, when key services stopped working. The information immediately appeared that it was the result of cybercriminals’ actions. Garmin was hiding behind technical problems, but the media suggested that the Evil Corp group was behind the attack, which previously took its toll on, for example, banks.

The attack had a lot of consequences for users, although of course it can be considered typical first world problems. Miron Nurski described this on Komórkomania problems with Garmina products:

I accepted the message that I am not able to view the list of training sessions or Garmin Pay payments with understanding. Such a charm of servers – it happens. However, I consider the fact that the app spewed an error and a message about service work at the time when I tried to enter the Alerts section as a gross inflection. Yes – Garmin won’t let me set an alarm because the server is down!

Of course, this is also a consequence of too much connection of services with the cloud, but it does not change the fact that the criminals have achieved their goal: they pissed off users and put the company in an uninteresting position.

And they can upset everyone even more if data about them from Garmin is leaked or problems continue, as it is now. The case is difficult because hackers have tough conditions.

They expect $ 10 million. for the decryption key. Garmin has a double problem. In such situations, experts suggest not to pay criminals. For a simple reason – it is unknown whether the other side will be truthful. Fraudsters can also pull the string – if it turns out that Garmin can pay $ 10 million, why not raise the stake? Not to mention the fact that it will encourage others.
