AvtoVAZ Lada Granta Production and Impact of Sanctions: Latest Updates and Changes

AvtoVAZ could resume Lada Grant production without airbags. The manufacturer explains it with the high demand, the media talk about the impact of sanctions.

AvtoVAZ plans to add a version of the Lada Granta without airbags to its model range, Motor.ru writes. The manufacturer’s representative emphasizes that full-featured versions of the Grant are also available at dealers, but such a simplified model could complement the range because it “is in great demand” and “corresponds to the current regulations and vehicle safety regulations in Russia”.

The “leaked” information from AvtoVAZ itself in the media shows that the company did not manage to prepare for the sanctions introduced in the USA and to negotiate the purchase of airbags from other suppliers, therefore Lada Vesta could also be left without this safety element.

A similar situation arose in the company in 2022, when a simplified model without “complex” electronics and airbags was released in crisis conditions. In the autumn of the same year, AvtoVAZ announced that it had managed to solve the problem with the availability of components and raised prices. The Granta was again equipped with a driver’s airbag, and in the higher equipment levels – with an airbag for the front passenger as well.

Currently, the Lada Grant family includes a sedan, a hatchback, a liftback, a station wagon and a cross station wagon. The cars are equipped with 1.6-liter engines that develop 90 and 106 hp. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The price starts at 699,900 rubles (about 7,000 euros).
