Avoid covering diabetic wounds with gauze, this is what the expert says

Brilio.net – Diabetes is a chronic disease. This disease occurs due to an increase in blood sugar (glucose) levels above normal values. There are two main types diabetesi.e. type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is caused by a disturbance in the body, so the body is unable to use blood glucose into cells, so glucose accumulates in the blood. Usually, the risk factors for this disease are heredity, unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, and many more.

Every year, the number of people with diabetes continues to grow and it is estimated that the number will reach more than 400 million people worldwide by 2030. Statistics show that the amputation procedure in 6 out of 7 diabetic foot sufferers, begins with a simple wound.

In fact, 85 percent of these injuries can actually be prevented and treated properly so that they do not develop into a more serious direction. This makes prevention and early detection of diabetic foot very important. One of them is to reduce the incidence of diabetic wounds and the risk of amputation in the future.

Heartology Cardiovascular Center, a wound specialist, Dr. Adisaputra Ramadhinara, said that the wound diabetes in the foot requires special treatment so that optimal healing can be achieved.

“Currently, the development of science in the field of wound care has succeeded in reducing the number of amputations. The use of various modern dressings to treat infections and keep the wound atmosphere moist is also very necessary,” Adi told the media at a virtual press conference entitled ‘Prevent Foot Amputations Due to Diabetes Complications’, Monday (2/8).

“Because in a humid atmosphere, the growth of new tissue becomes more optimal and the process of wound closure by new skin cells can occur more quickly,” he continued.

On this occasion, Adi also advised diabetic patients who have wounds on their bodies not to cover the wound with gauze. Because gauze can’t keep the wound area moist and can increase the risk of infection.

“A study showed that bacteria can penetrate up to 64 layers of gauze. This makes gauze not an ideal wound dressing,” he explained.

In addition, controlling blood sugar levels must be carried out optimally, so that the wound healing process can run well. “During treatment, the injured leg must also be rested and should not be a burden,” he added

According to him, currently, wound care always prioritizes the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation. In the case of diabetic wounds on the feet, wound care can be handled by a wound specialist.

“But if there is a blockage of blood vessels in the legs, then it is necessary to involve a vascular specialist for revascularization measures or improving blood flow to the legs to support the optimal wound healing process,” concluded Adi.
