Average retirement age above 65 for the first time | NOW

The average age of Dutch people who retired was above 65 for the first time last year. This is evident from data published on Monday from statistics agency CBS. More than 65 percent of the people who retired last year were 65 or older.

The average age at which people quit their working life has been increasing for years. For example, the average retirement age in the first years of this century was about 61 years. Since then, the average age has been increasing steadily, reaching 65 years and 1 month last year.

One reason for this is that employees are encouraged by the government to work longer. The age at which people receive AOW has also gradually increased in recent years. Last year it was 66 years and 4 months.

Last year there were 3.2 million pensioners in the Netherlands. Between 2001 and 2014, the share of retirees in the total population rose from 15.1 to 18.3 percent. Partly due to the increase in the state pension age, the share of pensioners in the population has been stable from 2014 onwards.
