Tragedy in the mountains. The death toll from an avalanche that broke off above Maso Corto in the Senales valley was two dead. The police, the mountain rescue and the Pelikan helicopter rescue intervened on the spot. The alarm was raised by witnesses, who saw the avalanche hit a group of ski mountaineers. The victims are the former president of Banca Raffeisen of Bolzano, Michael Gruner, 65, and his wife Monika Gamper; Gruner headed the lender for 23 years until last June. The couple had decided to spend the first Sunday of 2021 undertaking a quiet ski mountaineering trip on the snow-capped peaks of the house but an avalanche broke their lives, overwhelming and killing them. The tragedy took place in one of the most remote valleys of South Tyrol, already sadly at the center of the mountain chronicles on other occasions.

The large avalanche broke off at about 2,200 meters while they were just below the top of the Klosterkreuz mountain above the village of Certosa di Senales. The avalanche risk of 3 out of 5

At the scene of the accident, the men of the mountain rescue, the Pelikan 2 helicopter rescue, an Austrian mountain rescue helicopter and the carabinieri intervened. The alarm was raised by witnesses, who around noon saw the avalanche hit the group of ski mountaineers. Unfortunately for the two ski mountaineers there was nothing to do. In recent days, after heavy snowfalls, the South Tyrol avalanche service and the mountain rescue had called for the utmost attention to the instability of the snowpack. The avalanche danger in most of South Tyrol, after recent snowfalls, marked (grade 3 of 5). Almost exactly one year ago, on 28 December 2019, an avalanche hit some skiers on the Teufelsegg slope in Val Senales, causing the death of a 25-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter and another seven-year-old girl, all from Germany.
