Autopilot failed? Driver of a Tesla Model 3 crashes into a truck 06/08/20

Once again, there was a car accident involving a Tesla vehicle that involved the autopilot. This time the affected car is a Model 3.

• Model 3 accident in Taiwan
• Assistance system overlooks trucks
• Monitoring video shows collision

Tesla’s autopilot has drawn attention to itself several times in connection with accidents. While the assistance system hit the headlines a few months ago because it probably saved Model X drivers’ lives with a quick braking response, the autopilot recently failed miserably.

Model 3 crashes into a truck

In Taiwan, a Model 3 crashed into an overturned truck last Sunday that blocked two out of three lanes of a national road. A video is circulating on Twitter that a traffic camera should come from: It can be seen how the other cars seem to recognize the obstacle early on and drive past the truck on the only free lane while the Tesla vehicle is driving towards it – one Braking shortly before the obstacle, which can be suspected due to rising smoke, no longer prevented the collision.

The assistance system is said not to have recognized the large object on the street, reports electrek. However, it is unclear which features were activated, at least an “auxiliary system” should have been activated. Apparently, the driver got away this time without injuries – two years ago, a similar traffic accident, in which an Apple engineer died, caused a sensation.

The e-carmaker is always under pressure when it comes to incidents that affect the autopilot, as many opponents view such systems as critical in road traffic.
