Auto parts supplier Mahle shuts down production

The car supplier Mahle shuts down its production at all European locations. “The measures affect around 70 locations across Europe. Mahle coordinates the respective approach, such as applying for short-time work, with the employee representatives,” the company announced in a press release. The Carinthian Mahle location is also affected.

In connection with the coronavirus, the company speaks of an “extreme situation that was not predictable to this extent and whose further development is currently completely open”. The measures would be taken to curb the further spread of the coronavirus. “At the same time, we react entrepreneurially to the slump in the markets and in particular to the cessation of production by automobile manufacturers in Europe,” said Mahle CEO Jörg Stratmann. The production sites would be shut down by Wednesday, March 25 at the latest, and the indirect functions in administration and development “reduced to a few core functions”.

Mahle employs approximately 79,600 people worldwide. In Carinthian St. Michael ob Bleiburg / Smihel pri Pliberku (Völkermarkt district) a good 2,000 people work for Mahle Filtersysteme Austria, a subsidiary of Mahle Filtersysteme Deutschland. Around 200 people work for Mahle in Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria.
