Austrian Skier Marco Schwarz Suffers Serious Knee Injury in Bormio’s Downhill Run

BORMIO. Austrian skier Marco Schwarz seriously injured his right knee when he fell on Thursday’s downhill run in Bormio.

Examinations revealed that the second overall World Cup man has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and internal meniscus and damaged cartilage.

The season ended prematurely for him, the APA agency reported.

Twenty-eight-year-old Schwarz, who completed the descent as the SP leader, ended up in the safety net after falling on the Stelvia.

A brace was put on his injured leg and he was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Innsbruck, shaken.

There, later on Thursday, he underwent examinations that confirmed the unpleasant diagnosis. He will have an operation on Friday.

“After the fall, I felt pain in my right knee. I knew immediately that something was wrong. At the moment, I’m already focusing on the future.

My goal is clear, I want to return to the slopes,” declared the combined world champion from Cortina d’Ampezzo 2021.

“Our fears have come true. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is very unpleasant for Marc. He is out of the season and it is a huge loss for the whole team. It is certainly difficult for us when the biggest personality of the team drops out,” APA quoted the head of the Alpine section of the Austrian Ski Association Herbert Mandel.

The Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin triumphed in the Italian center, the defender of the big globe Marco Odermatt finished second.

The Swiss thus returned to the top of the overall ranking of the SP, when he replaced Schwarz.

He leads the Austrian by 72 points, but his competitor will not add any more. The third Sarrazin lags behind Odermatt by up to 336 points. On Friday, the men will compete in the Bormio super-G (11:30 a.m.).
