In order to contain the sharply increasing number of infections with the corona virus, Austria will soon introduce a lockdown for unvaccinated. “We are really going to take that step now,” confirmed Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg in Innsbruck on Friday.

Monday is already the day in two regions. In Salzburg and Upper Austria, a lockdown will start on Monday for unvaccinated. This was announced by Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein on Friday. But that’s not enough, it turns out. “The objective is clear: we want to give the green light on Sunday for a national lockdown of people who have not been vaccinated,” said Chancellor Schallenberg. He did not mention an exact timing for the introduction of the lockdown, but Austrian media write that it will probably come into effect on Wednesday.

It should also become clear on Sunday how strict the measure will be. The same rules will probably apply as during the third Austrian lockdown. This means that unvaccinated people will only be allowed to leave the house to meet their daily needs, to work or to seek medical help. They can also go outside for a walk or exercise. For example, a visit to the hairdresser is prohibited. The unvaccinated are also not allowed to go to a restaurant. It is currently unclear how long the lockdown will last for unvaccinated people.

2G rule

There will also be stricter rules for vaccinated Austrians. For example, they have to wear mouth masks in more places again. And many events are also cancelled.

Since last Monday, under the so-called 2G rule, only vaccinated or cured corona patients have been allowed in Austria in cafes, restaurants, hairdressers and events with more than 25 people. In addition, a 3G rule has also been in place since the beginning of November, which obliges unvaccinated employees to regularly submit a negative test.

These measures have led to a strong increase in the number of vaccinations in recent days, but in the meantime the number of infections also continues to peak. On Friday, nearly 11,800 infections were reported within 24 hours. “We need to tighten the screws a bit more,” concluded Schallenberg. However, according to the chancellor, vaccinated people cannot be required to go back into lockdown for fellow citizens who do not want a shot.
