Corona border controls, including health checks, will start at 00:00, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.
From midnight Austria also carries out corona border controls – including health checks – on the border with Germany. As at the borders with Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, all smaller border crossings will be closed, a spokeswoman for Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) told APA.
–
A spokeswoman told the Austrian news agency APA that smaller border crossings should be closed. Austria is already working in a similar way at the borders with Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Austria already controls a large part of its borders.
–
The situation on the border with Hungary was particularly tense on Wednesday, where numerous people from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Ukraine were waiting to enter. At the Nickelsdorf border crossing, a traffic jam of over 50 kilometers in length sometimes formed. Hungary opened the border around noon so that the Bulgarians, Romanians and Serbs can cross the country and travel to their home countries.

Austria is continuing its strategy of drastic measures with border controls on Germany to curb the spread of the Sars-Cov-2 virus.

Germany has been controlling Austria’s border since Tuesday
Germany already controls its border with Austria. Only people with a “valid reason for travel”, such as Commuters.
–
Border controls at the borders with Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Denmark and France are to be temporarily reintroduced, said German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on Sunday evening in Berlin.
–
“The spread of the corona virus is progressing rapidly and aggressively,” he said. “We have to assume that the peak of this development has not yet been reached,” said Seehofer. “Of course, German citizens have the right to return to their home country.” The duration of the measures is not yet foreseeable. As Seehofer said, it is all about travel. The movement of goods and crossing the border for commuters remain possible.

Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic …
Previously, other EU countries had largely closed their borders, including Denmark, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria. France also announced tighter controls in response to German measures.
