ANNOUNCEMENTS

Malaysia and Australia are satisfied with the conviction of three MH17 perpetrators. Both countries rightly state that life sentences have been handed down. Australia wants the convicted to be extradited.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a news conference that Russia must now take responsibility. “We have followed legal and judicial procedures and are calling on Russia to extradite those involved in this who have been found guilty in absentia so that justice can take its course.”

The two Russians and a Ukrainian were found guilty yesterday by the judge of having shot down the plane in the summer of 2014. The three life sentences imposed were equal to what was requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said his country supported the Dutch court’s decision. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing crash killed all 298 people on board. In addition to the nearly 200 Dutch casualties, 28 Malays, including crew members, and 27 Australians were also killed.

Ukrainian President Zelensky praises life sentences, but says it’s not over yet. “Now the perpetrators have been convicted and the groundwork has been laid to convict top level perpetrators as well.”

According to him, Russia should also be held responsible. “This decision is not just about three murderers. Russia has lied a lot about this catastrophe, but the main facts have nevertheless been proven.”

Yesterday, the prosecutor and the police announced that a follow-up investigation will soon be conducted into who else is responsible for the downing of the plane. It will become clear early next year whether more allegations will follow.
