Telecommunications provider AT&T announced today that it has activated its 5G network in 90 additional markets, including rural and urban areas of 58 municipalities in Puerto Rico.
“We are super excited about this launch. We are committed to providing our customers with the best network experience in the industry. This launch is evidence of that, “said José Juan Dávila, general manager of AT&T Puerto Rico, in an interview with this media outlet.
The executive specified that the launch includes coverage areas in 58 municipalities distributed among all the regions in which they divide the island, except Vieques and Culebra: Aguadilla (4 municipalities), Aibonito (7), Arecibo (6), Mayagüez (5) , Ponce (5), the municipality of Rincón and San Juan (30).
“In July we are going to launch the remaining markets to have coverage in 76 municipalities,” Dávila said. “We have Vieques and Culebra before the end of 2020”
“We are using the 850 Mhz band. (…) But we also use up to five spectrum bands so that the customer has a much better experience, with a much wider bandwidth, ”he explained about the launch, which in the industry is known as sub6 for using frequencies below 6 GHz.
These low and medium frequencies have greater penetration in buildings, including those of cement that are the construction standard in Puerto Rico and travel greater distances.
The executive indicated that the theoretical speeds in the coverage areas are greater than 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and that they have documented “real speeds at times with network traffic of over 250 Mbps”.
AT&T has eight 5G-compatible devices, including the mid-range Samsung Galaxy A71 5G phone that will be available on July 10.
“This device comes at a very attractive price that customers can obtain for $ 10 per month when they have an unlimited rate plan and they buy it on time. They also receive a (prepaid Visa card for $ 100 as a gift,” Dávila said about the offer of introduction of this model from Samsung.
Other AT&T 5G compatible devices are: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Note10 + 5G, S20, S20 + 5G and the S20 Ultra; as well as the LG V60 ThinQ 5G. NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot is only available to commercial customers.
As reported by the company, 5G access is now available to 190 markets and 120 million people in the United States and Puerto Rico.
