Luis Castillo was eliminated from play in the fifth inning and the Seattle Mariners lost 4-1 to Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
Carlos Santana’s single on the inside in the second inning was the full crop for the Mariners at the pot against JP Sears (6-2), who scored the win, and four rescues.
Seattle remains a game and a half behind Tampa Bay in the run up to the third and final American League wild card.
The Mariners remain 11 games from advancing to the playoffs for the first time since 2001, when they scored 116 regular season wins.
Castillo (7-6) took the defeat and matched his shorter start to the season with 4 innings and 2/3 on the mound. The right-hander gave up four points out of six shots, knocked out four and walked two.
His compatriot Domingo Acevedo pitched the ninth for his third save.
For the Mariners, the Dominicans Julio Rodríguez 4-0; Carlos Santana 4-1, with one point scored.
For Athletics, Puerto Rican Vimael Machín 3-1, with a point scored. Dominican Derma Garcia 4-0. Colombian Jordan Díaz 3-0, with one point scored.
