ASUS has updated the entire series of lightweight laptops VivoBook

Taiwanese company ASUS has prepared an update to the VivoBook family of laptops at the CES 2020 Consumer Electronics Show with the introduction of the S13, S14 and S15 or S333, S433 and S533 models, respectively.

The design has undergone some changes: the aluminum case received a “diamond cut” – chamfers on the edges, the keyboard buttons have become larger, and the Enter key has got a backlight. A cover with a previously smooth plain surface in one of four colors now has an iridescent texture, and the shades have become deeper. The turquoise color is replaced by green and blue.

ErgoLift design, which lifted the back of the laptop when opening the lid for cooling and keyboard convenience, is now removed.

Laptops from younger to older models have the following external indicators:

  • weight: 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 kg;
  • case thickness: 14.9, 15.9 and 16.1 mm;
  • screen to cover ratio: 88%, 85% and 86%.

As beforeOnly a 15-inch model has a physical numeric keypad, while laptops with a smaller diagonal rely on a combined touchpad with NumberPad function:

Laptops are built on the 10th generation of Intel Core processors (up to i7), use a video card NVIDIA GeForce MX250, up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, SSD drive up to 1 TB and Wi-Fi 6 communication module.

Among the ports there are three USB-A, one USB-C, HDMI, microSD and an audio output for connecting a headset. A fingerprint scanner is located on the upper right side of the touch panel. Harman Kardon speakers are still used.

In May last year, ASUS released the VivoBook S14 (S432) and S15 (S532), in which the touchpad took the 5.65 “IPS screen. ScreenPad 2.0. A rather interesting solution, inspired by the Apple Touch Bar and providing various scenarios, including as a companion display – you can transfer programs from the main screen to it, for example, a video player, Evernote, Spotify, and so on. The company promised to work on expanding compatibility.

This component is not present in updated laptops. Should this be considered a rejection of the concept, or will later launch more expensive versions with such a non-standard touch panel?
