Asteroids, comets & meteors are different, here are the definitions of each

KONTAN.CO.ID – Asteroids, comets and meteors are different, here is the meaning of each of these celestial bodies. Meteors and comets can generally be seen in the sky with an interesting view, while asteroids become a scary scourge for the planet if they hit.

Do you think asteroids, comets and meteors are similar or different celestial bodies?

Although these three things are celestial bodies, not all celestial bodies are the same. Likewise with the planets, not all planets have the same characteristics or even not all of them fall into the category of “fit” to be inhabited.

Talking about asteroids, comets and meteors, all three are celestial bodies that are familiar to our ears. Not infrequently, the appearance of these celestial bodies is also visible from Earth at certain times.

Let’s understand the celestial bodies of asteroids, comets and meteors, along with the meaning of each.

1. Asteroid

Asteroids are often referred to as minor planets or planetoids. According to NASA, an asteroid is a rock remnant in space from the early formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.

To date, the known asteroids are over a million, to be precise, 1,113,527.

Asteroids also differ from comets from their visual appearance. Comets display commas or tails, while asteroids do not.

In the sky, asteroids appear as dots of light, like stars, showing the planetary disks as small or non-existent. Asteroids are also easily distinguished from stars because of their motion.

2. Comet

Comets are celestial bodies that also revolve around the Sun. According to NASA, the definition of a comet is the frozen remains of the formation of the solar system consisting of dust, rock, and ice.

They range from a few miles to tens of miles in width.

When approaching the Sun, some of the material that makes up a comet will evaporate to form a gas head and tail. This is what makes the appearance of the comet look beautiful and decorates the night sky when it appears.
