Aspirin can help prevent preeclampsia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Aspirin is routinely recommended for pregnant people with preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) and antiphospholipid syndrome (an autoimmune disorder that causes blood clots).

“Preeclampsia can have an impact on the baby’s growth and have fatal consequences for the mother,” said a specialist obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Manggala Pasca Wardhana, SpOG (K) from the Surabaya Fetomaternal Medical Association in a webinar related to the prevention and management of preeclampsia on Friday.

Meanwhile, antiphospholipid syndrome can cause miscarriage, and can trigger the potential for preeclampsia.

Manggala explained that aspirin is a drug that also functions as a blood thinner, thereby increasing blood flow through the placenta.

“Aspirin is often given to patients with heart disease, but this drug is highly recommended for pregnant women to prevent preeclampsia,” explained Manggala.

The problem that often occurs is said by Manggala, pregnant women are sometimes negligent in consuming aspirin because they think aspirin is a drug for heart disease. Even though it is given in low doses, aspirin is one drug that is really needed for consumption by pregnant women.

Reporting from the Healthline page, aspirin in pregnant women not only helps prevent preeclampsia and antiphospholipid syndrome, but can also improve pregnancy outcomes for people who have previously had a miscarriage. This is stated in a new study from the American College of Physicians.

The report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in January 2021, found that the benefits of taking low-dose aspirin are more pronounced in women who are on a pregnancy program, or before conception occurs.

However, aspirin is not recommended for everyone because it increases the risk of bleeding, so it is important to talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of low-dose aspirin therapy before trying this method.
