Ashley, 21, is the first participant to be followed. She weighs 123 kilos and is undergoing a gastric bypass. In the taxi to the hospital she tells Locadia about the nasty consequences of being overweight. “After waiting a long time in the row of a roller coaster in Walibi, I didn’t fit in the cart. I wasn’t allowed in and everyone in line saw that happen. That hurt. I have less pain after the operation. ”
Gastric Bypass
When she is operated on, Locadia talks to her mother. She has also had a gastric bypass and is proud of her daughter’s choice. It hurts her that her daughter is being bullied about her weight. “That makes me angry. People don’t know what to do to others. I know what it’s like to be called names when you’re out of normal size. That will stick with you for the rest of your life.”
Ashley’s mother has not talked her daughter about stomach reduction. “But I do support it. It is a wise decision for her health. We can’t just lose weight because we love food.” When asked by the presenter whether it is not a quick fix to lose weight quickly with a device, she answers: “Certainly not. It’s not a solution, it’s a tool If only it were that easy.”
Future
After Ashley’s surgery, Locadia gives the family time for the three of them to recover. This is necessary, because when Ashley wakes up from the anesthesia, she wants nothing more than to close her eyes again: “Let me sleep”, is all she manages to say. A sign for Locadia to leave the family alone: “I’ll leave you alone, because now it’s just getting started. Enjoy your lice life for now, because the next six weeks will be tough.”
