As a ‘consultant with small letters’, Hiddink wants to think along with PSV | NOW

Guus Hiddink believes that his role as an adviser at PSV should not be overestimated. The 73-year-old from Gelderland wants to think along with the club where he has worked three times before.

“You can call me a consultant with small letters,” Hiddink told Tuesday from the De Herdgang sports complex AD. “Because you shouldn’t make this role bigger than it is.”

PSV announced at the end of December that after the winter break in Eindhoven, Hiddink would settle down to act as a sounding board for the new technical staff led by Ernest Faber, the successor to the dismissed Mark van Bommel.

As already stated at the time, Hiddink will not take a seat on the bench during competitions. It is primarily the intention that he will critically review matters with the aim of getting things back on track with the current number three of the Eredivisie.

“In the near future I will be watching images and thinking along about the group process and the way of playing. That is certainly also the case. Why does PSV come up with goals so easily? What is my idea with that? Things like that.”

Hiddink did not feel like a board position

Hiddink, who in the past worked twice as a trainer and once as an adviser at PSV, emphasizes that he is not going to get involved in administrative matters.

“Then you meet maybe three times a year, but a commissioner can suddenly get something as big as the dismissal of a trainer on his plate. No, let me stay close to the field and talk about football.”

The former success coach will show up at the club two to three times a week. His advice was taken seriously on Tuesday with the addition of René Eijkelkamp to the technical staff.

“René is someone with connecting qualities”, Hiddink praises his former assistant at PSV. “Good guy. You have to take it, I said immediately.”
