Artificial intelligence, a tool to combat misinformation and do good journalism

(EFE).- Artificial intelligence (AI) is a tool that, used well, can help combat misinformation and produce good journalism, highlighted experts in news verification gathered at a forum held this Thursday in Tegucigalpa.

This is what the speakers at the conference considered. Disinformation, multiplatform content and regional economy, which took place in Honduras, within the framework of the 90th anniversary of the founding of Radio HRN, which was commemorated last day 1, and the 50 years of the EFE Agency in Central America.

“Artificial intelligence is an opportunity to combat misinformation and contributes to better monitoring social networks and finding misinformation faster,” said EFE Verifica coordinator Ares Biescas.

In his opinion, disinformation with artificial intelligence poses a great challenge because the information “is more credible, sophisticated, hyper-realistic and can lead us to fall more easily.”

On the other hand, he defended the use of artificial intelligence to do “better journalism and investigative journalism.”

Artificial intelligence “used well, has a lot of potential,” said Biescas, who believes that technology is not a problem, but rather the people who use it to “do bad things.”

He also highlighted that better training journalists in verifying information before publishing or sharing news is one of the ways for the media to be “more resilient” in the face of misinformation.

Technology is not dangerous in itself and offers us both challenges and opportunities to combat disinformation,” Biescas added.

The conference was attended by executives from Radio HRN – a company allied with EFE in the fight against disinformation –, senior officials from Honduras and representatives of private companies.

The World Bank’s chief economist for the Central American region, Pedro Luis Rodríguez, also participated, and spoke about economic opportunities and challenges for Central America.

For CNN’s Multiplatform Content Manager, Esteban Campanela, technologies facilitate the fight against misinformation, since “they are media that can help and facilitate many things, such as doing good journalism.”

Campanela indicated that journalism must contribute to society, democracy, human rights, equality and “make a better world.”

He also highlighted the importance of adapting to new technologies, although he recognizes that “it is difficult” in the face of constant changes. In addition, he emphasized the need to “take care” of users’ trust in news and media.
