Faced with some repercussions that can manifest in the kidneys, there is hemodialysis, a procedure in order to supplant the functions performed by the kidneys, in most cases, this is carried out when these filtering organs stop working.
A fairly safe process is dialysis through the arteriovenous fistula, a safe intervention where the two main blood vessels of the heart (vein and artery) are joined and optimal blood circulation is achieved in the body, in addition to complying with the excretion of waste.
In an interview with the Journal of Medicine and Public Health (MSP), Dr. Jorge Martínez Trabal, a vascular surgeon, talks about the aforementioned procedure where he deepens the improvement of people’s quality of life, in addition to hemodialysis as a fundamental and vital treatment in certain patients.
“The arteriovenous fistula is a connection where a vein and an artery join, creating a closed circuit. In principle, this mechanism achieves that a liter of blood passes or passes where there is a high pressure system at the entrance and a low at the outlet, in this way the blood can be cleaned and is much safer than the catheter (…), where it is placed in the jugular vein and the tip or end of this tool is located in the right atrium of the heart, not However, this method can be detrimental to the patient as there is a risk of complicating infection ”, said the doctor.
Causes of kidney failure
There are some cases where a patient can develop kidney failure, this is due to a certain comorbidity or pathology that can affect both the circulatory system and kidney function, when this happens it is necessary to start with treatment to supplant the excretion of waste.
“In Puerto Rico, the number one cause of kidney failure is diabetes, as is known, the disease has an effect on the vascular system and the impact on the kidneys is notorious, as they are gradually being damaged and their filtering is already it is not enough or adequate or with medication, at this point is when dialysis is needed “said the doctor.
Dialysis and its use
There are two types of conditions that can promote the use of dialysis, a procedure where the functions of the kidney are supplanted with respect to the elimination of waste in the body, the purpose of this tool is to restore the patient’s quality of life and prevent complications that may be caused by this abnormality.
“When the patient suffers from uremia, it is when the kidneys cannot eliminate urea from the body, so that the waste from the urine accumulates in the blood and causes other diseases, when this happens, patients have effects on the heart, muscles. , the liver, the brain and little by little this can cause cardiovascular collapse. Another reason where dialysis has to be used is when the individual has a problem in handling fluids, retains them and the person swells, the patient can fall into heart failure and the procedure can help him return that control of fluids. volume and electrolytes ”concluded Dr. Jorge Martínez.
