Art object dedicated to the outstanding director Oļģerts Kroders will be opened in Valmiera – «Krodera apple tree» / Article / LSM.lv

In honor of the outstanding director Oļģerts Kroders, the environmental object “Krodera apple tree” created by artists Aivars Vilipsōns and Ivars Miķelsons will be installed near the Valmiera Theater, representatives of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation said. It is made possible by the Kroder Foundation, the Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation and other donors.

The bronze apple tree with apples is a visual representation of the Kroder Prize in an urban environment. The award is given to the most challenging and outstanding artistic contribution of the year in professional theater. So far, it has been received by director Viesturs Kairišs, actress Guna Zariņa, set designer and costume designer Monika Pormale and actress Indra Briķe.

“We made the decision to support this beautiful project already in 2017, visiting Valmiera and listening to the intentions of the Kroder Foundation. It is a great pleasure that we have been able to implement it together. I am convinced that Boris would be satisfied to see the embodiment of this idea in the beautiful work of art, ”says patron Ināra Tetereva.

The location of the art object – near the Valmiera Drama Theater – is significant, because it is in this theater that the director has spent two of his most productive stages of life, including the last years, embodying the dream of like-minded theater (1964–1974 and 2001–2012).

The opening of the art object will take place symbolically at the end of the Valmiera Summer Theater Festival – on August 9 at 19:00.

Oļģerts Kroders (August 9, 1921 in Riga – October 10, 2012 in Valmiera) has worked in almost all Latvian theaters, staging 136 performances, was a film and theater actor. He was deported to the High North (1941–1956). Oļģerts Kroder’s spirit aristocracy and inner independence have allowed him to turn against mental and physical violence, cliché aesthetic canons both in art and in life, emphasizing in his productions the importance of human activity, responsibility and inner freedom as a thinking being. Probably that is why he has staged William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” in three different theaters four times in his life. The director is buried in Valmiera, Dīvala cemetery.

Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation. The Family Charity Foundation, founded in 2010 by patrons Boris and Ināra Teterevs, supports excellent and socially useful initiatives and promotes the development of culture, art and education in Latvia and the world.
