Arnhem residents commemorate local resident who died after street abuse | NOW

Dozens of people held silence for two minutes in Arnhem’s Spijkerkwartier on Saturday to commemorate the 73-year-old local resident who was abused in the street by a group of young people last week. The Arnhemmer later died in hospital from his injuries.

After the moment of silence, there was spontaneous applause for the victim. At the spot where he was mistreated near his house on Spijkerstraat, there were flowers and lights were lit.

Mayor Ahmed Marcouch van Arnhem was also present at the commemoration. “Arnhem has been deeply touched by the horrible crime. The solidarity tonight in which Arnhemmers visited each other to give a place to their great sorrow was impressive. I know that the relatives also find this heart-warming”, Marcouch said afterwards.

The organizers of the memorial had asked people to keep a distance of 1.5 meters. Most people adhered to this. According to the organization, there were about five hundred interested people.

Several youngsters, mainly underage, were arrested for the abuse. Four of them are still in jail.

The police are still investigating the violent incident. It is not yet known what was the reason to knock the Arnhemmer off his bicycle.
