Man Arrested Near Obama’s D.C. Home with Weapons and Explosives

In a shocking incident, a man with materials to make explosives and an active Jan. 6-related warrant was arrested near former President Barack Obama’s Washington, D.C., neighborhood, according to multiple sources briefed on the matter.

The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Taylor Taranto from Seattle, Washington. Secret Service agents spotted him within blocks of the Obama’s home, prompting him to flee. However, he was apprehended by the Secret Service before reaching the Obama residence.

Taranto’s van was found parked close to the location of his arrest. Law enforcement officials familiar with the details revealed that multiple weapons and materials to make an explosive device similar to a Molotov cocktail were discovered in the van. However, the device had not been assembled at the time of the arrest.

What is particularly concerning is that Taranto had made threats against a public figure during recent livestreams on social media. Additionally, he had an open warrant related to the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol. It is clear that Taranto’s presence in Obama’s neighborhood was not a coincidence, as confirmed by a U.S. official.

According to a senior law enforcement official, Taranto had been in the Washington, D.C., area for a couple of months. He had been seen camping out in his van near the D.C. jail where many of the Jan. 6 defendants are being held. Some of his livestreams were even posted while he was in the D.C. area.

Taranto has been charged with being a fugitive from justice, as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Fortunately, this incident did not result in any injuries. It remains unclear whether the Obamas were at home during the time of the arrest.

The arrest of Taranto near Obama’s D.C. home serves as a reminder of the ongoing security threats faced by public figures and the importance of law enforcement’s vigilance in preventing potential acts of violence.
