Argentina strengthens security at airports due to strained relations between Washington and Tehran

The government of Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has ordered the strengthening of security at airports and borders in the country, which suffered two terrorist attacks in 1992 and 1994, due to the emerging tension between the United States and Iran, according to the Argentine newspaper “Infobay”, and the newspaper indicated that the new conflict between Washington and Tehran The attack, ordered by US President Donald Trump, resulted in the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, a prominent Iranian commander in Baghdad, whose killing caused concern around the world about a possible regional conflict.

“Because of the history of the two attacks we were subjected to, Argentina should be on alert for this type of conflict all over the world,” Argentine Defense Minister Agustin Rossi told Infobay newspaper.

The newspaper said that the government raised the level of alert at the country’s airports and land borders, and strengthened security at guarded targets, such as the US embassy in Buenos Aires.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry issued a statement at the weekend urging the parties to the conflict to “work for a peaceful and negotiated exit that avoids the escalation that endangers international security.”

Argentina suffered two terrorist attacks in which more than 100 people were killed, in 1992, a car bomb collided with the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, while two years later, another car bomb attacked the headquarters of the Israeli-Argentine Association (AMIA).

Israel has blamed Iran for the attack on its diplomatic headquarters, and the Argentine Court of Justice has also accused former Iranian officials of the AMIA attack, but none of the facts have been clarified yet.

Qualified sources from the Ministry of Security of the Sabina Frederick Department were assigned by a decision of President Alberto Fernandez, who ordered the enhancement of American targets located in Argentine territory, and ordered the imposition of a greater presence of security forces at airports and American airlines operating in Argentina, according to the Argentine newspaper “Infobay”.

The Argentine authorities emphasized raising the level of preparedness, and demanded that citizens exercise caution and take preventive measures, although they said in a statement that these measures do not mean that there is concern, but rather protective measures in the event of possible possibilities.
