Are you negotiating the purchase or donation of more vaccines?

(CRHoy.com) The Government of Costa Rica has ensured that it has contracts for vaccines against COVID-19 to immunize 100% of the population. However, the doses do not arrive and the massive vaccination last weekend was thanks to a donation of 500,000 doses by the United States government.

However, when it is asked beyond these doses and the new negotiations that the government is holding are questioned, the answer remains a mystery.

At this time, and according to what the health authorities have commented, Costa Rica depends on the shipment of doses through pharmaceutical houses Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, as well as those from the Covax mechanism.

In other words, through these contracts, the Government assures that it will achieve coverage to immunize the entire population over 12 years of age with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

However, when asking whether the country has negotiated with other pharmaceutical companies to guarantee the arrival of more doses to the country, no answer is obtained.

The Government’s comment has been that it is pending for if any possibility of donation arises, However, everything points to there is no other negotiation to obtain more doses against the virus.

“From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs procedures are maintained in case of possible donations, such as the one carried out by the United States, which allow the campaign to be speeded up, ”the Ministry of Communication responded to CRHoy.com.

Donations

On Tuesday, July 13, Costa Rica received a donation from the United States of 500 thousand doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 from the Pfizer-BioNtech company.

However, to date the process through which these vaccines were donated and there is also no explanation for why that amount. Doubts arise since several countries, including neighbors of Central America, USA donated much larger shipments than the one delivered to Costa Rica.

For example, to Guatemala has donated 4.5 million doses, to Honduras 1.5 million, to El Salvador 3 million, to Colombia 3.5 million and to Bolivia, Paraguay and other countries 1 million of vaccines.

When asked by CRHoy.com, the government only replied that “Due to the nature of the diplomatic efforts, the details are not revealed until they are finalized.”

With these doses donated by the North American country, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund was able to reach the 45% of all people who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The country registers the application of 3,193,895 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
