Are you looking for a job? NY offers you free workshops in Spanish to reinforce your skills – Telemundo New York (47)

The New York Department of Labor is offering free online workshops Monday through Thursday to residents looking to hone their skills while looking for a job, and many of these courses are in Spanish.

The agency offers workshops on resume writing, networking, exploring the JobZone, and other must-have skills for getting a job.

The New York Career Center system offers a variety of classes, workshops, job fairs, and virtual workshops, as well as hiring for numerous companies. Select your Labor Market Region or your local Career Center to find events and job fairs in your area. Open here for more details.

This Thursday, July 22, from 11 am to noon, the workshop will be held Strategies for the Job Interview by Zoom.

The job interview can be intimidating if you aren’t sure what to expect, if you don’t know how to prepare, and if you don’t know the interviewer’s expectations. In this workshop, you will learn how to have a successful interview and the types of questions you can expect.

Next week, on Thursday, July 29 from 11 am to noon, also on Zoom, you can participate in the workshop How to Get Over Your Job Loss.

Here you can see the list of workshops in Spanish and in English available online.

Last June, the COVID-19 pandemic caused an economic crisis and skyrocketing unemployment. By then, New York City reported that nearly one in five people was out of work.

A year later, new data from the state Department of Labor shows that unemployment rates in many metropolitan areas of the state have dropped, some by more than half. But New York City continues to lag behind.

The statewide unemployment rate last month fell to 7.7% statewide, a slight decrease from 7.8% in June. But within the state, the unemployment picture continues to vary.

In the Buffalo area, for example, the unemployment rate last June reached 13.7% and has since fallen to 5.7%. In Ithaca, which typically has one of the lowest unemployment rates, unemployment fell from 9.2% a year ago to 4.3% last month.

Similar declines have occurred over the past 12 months in other areas, including the Capital Region, Binghamton and Rochester areas.

But New York City’s unemployment rate remains at a double-digit percentage point. In June 2020, the city reached 18.7% unemployment. Last month it stood at 10.1%.

New York State as a whole is estimated to have lost 2 million jobs during the economic shutdown due to the pandemic, with the entertainment and hospitality industries hit the hardest. At the same time, employers in many industries have reported difficulties filling vacant positions as restrictions related to the pandemic are removed.
