Archaeologists have found the remains of a medieval settlement in the center of Ostrava. A new apartment building will be built on the site – ČT24 – Czech Television

For many years, the people of Ostrava have known the place in the city center as a parking lot. Until the 1950s, there were houses with arcades, called laubs in Ostrava. Beneath them, archaeologists uncover the remains of a medieval settlement.

“Here we can see a truly unique archaeological situation, the remains of a wooden house, from about the fourteenth century. The horizontally laid wood strengthened the area of the house. It can be said that at that time there was a wooden time in Ostrava. The whole city, with the exception of the Church of St. Wenceslas, was made of wood and clay, “described the director of the territorial department of the National Monuments Institute, Michal Zezula.

It lost its prestige in the middle of the 19th century

The six plots that archaeologists are researching have been among the most lucrative for centuries. Local honors, mayors and nobility lived there. “The formation plays with all colors, we see various terrain levelings there. We see red layers there, which indicate fires in the building, “Zezula explained.

In addition to the remains of ceramics, archaeologists also found merchant weights and jewelry. “Here’s the earrings, originally it was a piece of jewelry with a circular shape, with such a strange S-shaped handle,” the jeweler described the piece of jewelry.

It lost its prestige in the middle of the nineteenth century. The houses were bought by merchants, pubs, cabaret and brothels remained in them. Beer bottles, toothpaste, an inkwell and women’s make-up were found from that time.

The city will sell the land to an investor

The city already has a project and a building permit for the Nové Lauby project. “The city will sell the land to an investor who will build it all, and at the same time we will commit that when the project is completed, we will buy a certain number of apartments for the city and the entire parking area, which will serve public purposes,” said the mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura (YES) .

The new apartment building with an atrium, roof terraces, commercial premises and an underground car park will cover the work of archaeologists. However, part of the historical settlement of Ostrava will be preserved and people will see it under the arcade. The construction should be completed by 2023.
