Archaeologists discover ancient Mayan palace in Mexico | NOW

Archaeologists have discovered a large palace near the city of Cancun in eastern Mexico, which was probably used a thousand years ago by the Mayan elite, Mexican authorities report Thursday.

The building is approximately six meters high, 55 meters long and 15 meters wide. It was inhabited between 600 and 1050, according to the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico.

The Maya lived between 250 and 900 in parts of what are now the countries of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. “This work is just the beginning, we have just begun to uncover one of the most extensive structures in the area,” said one of the site’s archaeologists.

The area where the palace was found will probably be set up for the public in the near future.
