The General Secretariat of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) has reacted strongly to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ criticism of the appointment of the Moroccan diplomat Amina Selmane as representative of the Arab Maghreb Union within the African Union (AU) and against the reception she received from the chairman of the AU committee, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

In a statement, the UMA General Secretariat recalled that the appointment of Amina Selmane was decided in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures, and that the reception of the new representative of the Arab Maghreb Union by the President of the AU- commission is in line with respect for diplomatic customs and international agreements.

The General Secretariat has also expressed its deep regret at the “contradiction of the Algerian parties” stating that the Secretary General’s term of office definitively ended on August 1, 2022, “although senior officials of the Algerian state have continued to correspond to date with the Secretary General, with at least nine correspondences, the last of which were sent by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister and the President of the Algerian Republic”, to wish Moussa Faki Mahamat a happy 2023.
