Apple will pay billions more for slowing down iPhones

Recall that Apple has definitely not won yet. The settlement actually took place only within the federal processor. The action brought in March this year, which concerns consumers themselves, is being dealt with separately.

So the American company is in danger of having to reach deep into its pockets. In a class action lawsuit, American consumers want Apple 500 million USD, which corresponds to 11.1 billion crowns.

Apple had to pay a fine in early February, for example EUR 25 million, ie in terms of 572 million crowns. It was also assessed by the French Office for the Protection of Competition and Consumers (DGCCRF) due to the slowdown of iPhones.

The manufacturer started slowing down iPhones with older batteries at the end of 2017, intentionally. The operating system can evaluate the state of the battery itself and, according to the spokesperson, tries to prevent unexpected shutdowns. Therefore, in cases where the battery is no longer in 100% condition, it will reduce performance to such an extent that “the user is not restricted in his work”.

However, the only limitation in this case is considered to be the accidental shutdown of the phone, not the loss of performance that users began to point out after the entire story was published.

Apple subsequently became the target of litigation for failing to provide users with sufficient information about the feature. They could then be misled that their devices were obsolete and slow, and they could buy a new phone with the logo of a delicious apple.

The system already has a switch

Under a wave of criticism, Apple has previously included in the system the possibility of disabling this “protective function”, but this was clearly not taken as a mitigating circumstance in imposing a fine. The switch-off can be done via an item called Battery condition, in which users find out exactly how the battery has aged due to the use of the phone.

When the battery is not in the best condition, the limit switch is displayed in this menu. So if users of newer apple smartphones feel that their device is unnecessarily slow, they can simply turn off the feature or pay for a new battery.

At what percentage of battery power the switch will start to appear exactly, Apple has not officially stated. According to some foreign sources, however, this should be the case for devices with 60% or less.

IOS provides information on the current battery status.
