Apple Warns Against Using Rice: What to Do When Your Phone Falls in Water

After dropping your phone in water, you may want to try everything to get it working again.

From leaving your phone in rice to drying it with a hair dryer, there are dozens of legendary methods online that are guaranteed to fix your phone. So how true are these?

Rice warning from Apple

Apple has now revealed that some classic advice could actually harm your iPhone.

If your phone won’t turn on or you see a ‘liquid detection warning’, Apple says the best advice is to be patient. According to the company, depositing it in rice may damage your phone.

If you accidentally dropped your phone into water, we explain what you need to do.

What to do if your phone falls into water

Getting your phone wet can happen to any of us and can be very worrying, but the most important thing is not to panic.

It may be tempting to try turning the phone on or plugging it into the charger to check that it works, but never do this.

The first thing to do is to remove the phone from the water as quickly as possible and wipe off the excess with a clean, dry towel.

The longer the phone is left in water, the faster the water will penetrate an important part and the longer it will take to dry.

Apple recommends unplugging all cables from your iPhone. If the phone is completely wet, turning it off as soon as possible may also help.

Apple recommends ‘gently tapping your iPhone on your hand with the connector facing down’ to drain excess water from the charging port.

Once you’ve done this, all that’s left is to leave your phone in a dry area with good air flow and wait.

If you’re getting a ‘liquid detected’ warning even though your phone hasn’t been dropped into water, this means there’s some moisture in the charging port.

If you see this message, Apple recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before trying again. However, the company recommends waiting up to 24 hours for the phone to dry completely.

Don’t do these if your phone falls into water

Apple has confirmed that there is no advantage to putting your phone in a bowl of rice.

The idea behind this theory is that dry rice acts as a desiccant, similar to silica gel packs that draw water out of a phone.

In reality, rice doesn’t work that way, and leaving the phone in rice can actually block airflow.

This trick seems to work because leaving the phone in the rice keeps it out of sight and reduces the temptation to turn it on or charge it before it dries.

So, when you finally get the phone out of the brass it seems to have been miraculously repaired.

However, in the new guide, Apple specifically warns against trying this method, saying that ‘doing so may cause small rice particles to damage your iPhone.

You can try drying your phone faster with an external source. But while a hair dryer may seem like a good idea, Apple also warned against it.

In the guide, Apple says you should not ‘dry your iPhone using an external heat source or compressed air.’

Although the company does not explain why, these methods can probably heat your phone too much.

If you’ve waited half an hour and still see the liquid detection warning, it’s because there’s still water in the connector or under the pins of the charging cable.

If you’re in a rush to charge your phone, it might seem logical to try draining that water with something absorbent like a paper towel or cotton swab.

Inserting any foreign object into the charging port may bend the pins or cause something to get stuck there; Both of these can prevent your phone from charging.

So, remember that if you got your phone wet, it is always better to leave your phone in a dry place and wait rather than rushing and risking further damage.
