As usual, neither Tim Cook nor Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO, will give the iPhone sales breakdown when presenting the first fiscal quarter results on January 27. There is little doubt that the iPhone 12 line-up has had a very good launch, but many are questioning the fate of the mini version. The little phone is cute and people are happy with it, but customers seem to prefer the iPhone 12, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max.
Selon Katy Huberty, Apple would have increased production of iPhone 12 Pro by two million iPhone 12 Pro during the first three months of 2021, to the detriment of the iPhone 12 mini, whose production would have been reduced by the same volume. In other words, sales of the 5.4-inch smartphone would not be at the level of the other models, which requires a readjustment of the assembly capacities in favor in particular of the iPhone 12 Pro.
The Morgan Stanley analyst also indicates that the iPhone 12 is selling better in China than in the United States (where the Pro models seem to be winning the votes). The apparently unenviable place of the iPhone 12 mini in the 2020 smartphone vintage has already been highlighted two or three times since its launch last November (read: The iPhone 12 mini at the back of the pack in iPhone sales 12).
