Apple probably hadn’t planned it, but airtags are used to steal cars

Presented by Apple as little gadgets capable of making us find our keys or even our bag, the airtags also have long deviating uses from what the Apple could imagine.

Since the release of the AirTags, these have been rented by their owners, who had thus been able to find luggage, handbags, or simply their keys, lost in the meanders of a sofa, as the announcement video of ‘Apple was already illustrating this when the product was released. But in addition to these predictable and intended uses of AirTags, Apple discovered that these little trackers had other uses.

Indeed, thieves in the municipality of York, Ontario, Canada use small Apple products to make their lives easier and steal specific cars. Local police reported that several thefts had taken place in recent weeks, with thieves placing an AirTag inside the cars, so as not to lose track of them and easily find them after dark. Parked in front of its owner’s home, the car is then at the mercy of thieves who only have to help themselves.

Thieves then use the old ways of opening cars with screwdrivers, a more discreet method that also avoids setting off alarms. Once the car is opened, they only have to use one of the car’s ports to start it without the keys. Special software is then used. Normally reserved for mechanics, the latter is used by thieves to start cars silently.

No case in France for the moment

If no flight due to an AirTag has yet been noted in France, the phenomenon could very soon arrive in France. In order to prevent this, the York police recall that it is advisable to install surveillance cameras in front of his home, in order to be able to prove the theft, and to help the police in their investigation. The best solution remains as much as possible to park in a closed space, if possible underground or then in a private garage.

For its part, Apple has proposed a solution to allow users to be able to know if someone is following them thanks to an AirTag. You have to go to the application settings location to be able to activate this option. The Cupertino company explains that anyway, an AirTag that would stay more than three days, far from its owner would emit a sound, so that the latter finds it, or in this case, to warn the person being followed.
