De Blasio had already ordered in October that the city’s more than 300,000 employees must be vaccinated. Tens of thousands initially refused and were released without payment. In the meantime, the number of objectors has fallen. So now 86 percent of the police are vaccinated, before the measure it was only 70 percent. In the case of the fire department, the figure jumped from 58 to 84 percent, in the case of garbage disposal from 62 to 87 percent. In short: the compulsory vaccination had an effect in New York.
Other American cities passed similar regulations, including Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles. But no mayor, apart from de Blasio, has yet dared to impose compulsory vaccinations on private companies. One reason for this is likely to be legal concerns. Because the nationwide rules that Biden imposed are currently being challenged in several US courts. Three judges in New Orleans have already suspended his vaccine requirement, justification: It is like a “sledgehammer” and leads too far.
“Step should cause uncertainty in the economy”
De Blasios’ measure is likely to meet with approval from the New Yorkers. The willingness to vaccinate in the city is high, 5.9 million adults had at least the first dose injected, which corresponds to 84 percent of the population. For comparison: nationwide, this value in the USA is 71 percent.
Still, not everyone in New York is happy about de Blasio’s compulsory vaccination. “The step should cause great uncertainty in the economy,” says Kathryn Wylde, head of the powerful lobby association Partnership for New York City. “Because it is unclear whether it is even legal.”

Wylde refers to the legal disputes over Biden’s compulsory vaccination. “It’s hard to imagine,” says Wylde, “that New York’s mayor can do something that America’s president may not be allowed to.”
